FOOD CITY BORDER BOWL KICKS OFF JAN. 21 FOR TENNESSEE, KENTUCKY FOOTBALL ALL-STARS

Matchup at Sevier County High School to stream live on ESPN3

All-star high school football players from Tennessee and Kentucky will face off at the 10th annual Food City Border Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 2 p.m. at Sevier County High School.

The exhibition game features top-performing seniors from high schools across both states to compete at the annual bowl. This year’s game features 45 Kentucky players led by head coach Jerry Herron of Williamsburg High School, and 46 Tennessee players led by head coach Shawn Witten of Elizabethton High School.

“We are excited to bring the Food City Border Bowl Kentucky vs. Tennessee All-Star Game to Sevier County High School,” said Phillip Fulmer, Border Bowl co-chair and former University of Tennessee head football coach. “This will be a great event for families, children and football fans. Thanks to our great sponsors, coaches and players, Rocky Top Sports World, and our many volunteers for making this game happen. The game will be a fantastic tourism effort for Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville which still stands strong!”

At the game, firefighters and first responders from Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville will join the mayor of Gatlinburg on the field to be honored for their efforts during the Sevier County wildfires.

The game will be streamed on ESPN3 by M&M Productions USA and made available to potential college recruiters through a partnership with Recruit Status, an innovative information platform that simplifies the college sports recruiting process. Fulmer will provide commentary during the ESPN3 broadcast.

The border state matchup has proven to be a competitive affair with Tennessee winning five of the nine games. Tennessee was victorious in 2016 with a 29-14 win over Kentucky. That victory ended a three-year consecutive Kentucky winning streak.

“Food City is excited to serve as the title sponsor of this premier all-star event which showcases local football talent from throughout the region,” said Steven C. Smith, Food City president and chief executive officer. “We are privileged to operate a number of supermarkets throughout eastern Tennessee and southeast Kentucky, and we’re proud to have this opportunity to support our area youth and the communities we serve.”

Practice sessions with the all-stars will be held Wednesday through Friday this week at the Rocky Top Sports World in Gatlinburg. Thursday’s practice session will be open to the media at 1:30 p.m.

Tickets for the game are $10 each; children ages five and under are admitted free. Tickets can be purchased on game day at Sevier County High School, 1200 Dolly Parton Parkway, in Sevierville.
